ZITF’S REFURBISHED FAIR SPIRE SHOWCASES MODERN LEGACY

The Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) in Bulawayo has officially unveiled the centrepiece of its ongoing infrastructure renewal: the newly refurbished base of the iconic Fair Spire. Towering above the exhibition grounds, the Spire has served as a defining landmark for decades, but its transformation ahead of the ZITF 2026 edition signals a sophisticated pivot toward modern architecture while carefully preserving its historical legacy. The refurbishment has effectively granted this aging giant a new lease on life, offering a fresh, contemporary aesthetic that matches the fair’s forward-looking themes.

The stark contrast between the Spire’s previous appearance and its new look is a testament to careful architectural redesign. Historically, the base of the concrete obelisk was anchored by a quaint, A-frame structure featuring simple clear glass panels, orange curtains, and the functional but straightforward signage for “INFORMATION.” It was a classic, mid-century functional space set against a bright blue sky and surrounded by colourful flagpoles representing participating nations. While functional, it lacked the architectural gravitas required for a premier international business hub in the 2020s.

The transformation is radical. The new base retains its placement beneath the heavy concrete legs of the obelisk but is now defined by sleek, jet-black cladding and dark, reflective tinted glass. The outdated A-frame has been streamlined into a sophisticated modern pavilion.

The entrance is accessed via a newly defined paved brick walkway and characterized by a bold, cantilevered entry canopy. This modern architectural intervention creates a dramatic, almost monolithic effect. The new facade’s dark glass reflects the surrounding grounds and the overcast sky, offering an aggressive yet refined presence that visually anchors the massive concrete Spire above it.

This refurbishment represents more than just an aesthetic upgrade. It is a powerful symbol of renewal at ZITF, signalling a commitment to upgrading Zimbabwe’s core business infrastructure to compete globally. The integration of modern materials like smoked glass and structural black steel into the existing heritage site proves that progress can coexist with preservation. As ZITF 2026 continues to draw global partners, the iconic Fair Spire stands not only as a tall concrete memory of the past but also as a modern gateway to the nation’s economic future.
