ZIMBABWEAN BUSINESSMAN GROWS BSI STEEL ACROSS SOUTHERN AFRICA

The remarkable expansion of BSi Steel across the African subcontinent serves as a powerful testament to the resilience, determination, and entrepreneurial spirit that defines Zimbabwean business leaders.

While BSi Steel operates today as a massive regional force, its roots remain proudly and deeply embedded in Zimbabwean soil, charting a trajectory that began with a modest vision and evolved into a multi-national industrial footprint.

The story belongs to its founder and chairman, William Battershill, a native of Marondera. In 1985, Battershill made the pivotal decision to leave Zimbabwe for South Africa, where he launched a small venture named Discount Steel. Operating initially as a lean, one-man business with very limited working capital, the fledgling enterprise primarily sold rejected tubing to local farmers.

Through sheer grit and an innate understanding of heavy industry demands, Battershill gradually expanded his product range to include light steel sections and engineering components, laying the cornerstone for what would become an industrial empire.

Overcoming Frontiers with Continental Expansion

By the turn of the millennium, the enterprise underwent a significant rebranding to become BSi Steel, reflecting its evolved status as a premier steel merchant, processor, and distributor. Driven by strategic partnerships and a reputation for reliability, Battershill steered the company beyond South African borders to capture the wider Southern African Development Community (SADC) market.

The company established robust distribution networks and physical operations across critical African economies. Branches and franchises quickly materialized in Zambia, covering major hubs like Lusaka and Kitwe, alongside a strong presence in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) through strategic centers in Lubumbashi and Kolwezi.

Honoring the Roots: The Full Circle Return

Despite this extensive geographic spread, the firm never lost connection to where it all began. In 2000, the company brought its success full circle by establishing a dedicated franchise in Harare. Today, BSi Steel Zimbabwe operates out of major commercial hubs, including a main facility in the Workington industrial area of Harare and a dedicated sales office in Bulawayo, supplying high-quality mild steel, roofing, and structural products to the domestic market.

The corporate culture at BSi Steel continues to mirror the steadfast perseverance of its founder. By maintaining a unique blend of a professionally run service center and a human-centered, family-oriented environment, the company bridges local values with international execution. As regional infrastructure demands surge, the firm remains uniquely positioned to anchor Southern Africa’s construction boom, guided by a leadership ethos forged decades ago in Marondera.
