The countdown for the high-profile return of international football to Zimbabwe took a massive leap forward as the Ministry of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture marked a historic developmental milestone at the country’s flagship sporting venue. In a vivid demonstration of the power of public-private collaborations, Sakunda Holdings has officially handed over the newly installed, state-of-the-art bucket seats and an upgraded all-weather playing turf to the government, signaling the imminent completion of the stadium’s comprehensive structural overhaul.
A total of 44,000 modern bucket seats have been meticulously fitted across the grandstands as part of a targeted, ongoing intervention to restore the iconic 37-year-old facility to international standards. The National Sports Stadium had been barred from hosting international matches by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) due to infrastructural deficiencies, a sanction that previously forced the senior men’s national football team to play crucial home fixtures on foreign soil.
The completion of the seating architecture and the laying of the advanced all-weather pitch directly resolve the core compliance issues raised by international inspectors.
The high-level handover ceremony and inspection tour was led by the Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Honourable Lieutenant General (Rtd) Ambassador A.N. Sanyatwe. He was flanked by Deputy Minister Emily Jesaya, Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) President Nqobile Magwizi, and Sakunda Holdings Chief Operations Officer Mberikwazvo Chitambo.
Speaking during the official presentation, Minister Sanyatwe expressed profound gratitude for the outstanding, precise engineering work executed by Sakunda Holdings, while extending commendations to all the local and international sub-contractors involved in the intensive rehabilitation programme.
Minister Sanyatwe emphasized that these extensive renovations reflect the government’s unwavering commitment to modernizing the nation’s sports infrastructure in direct alignment with the macroeconomic goals of Vision 2030. He noted that creating world-class, secure facilities is essential for nurturing local athletic talent and giving passionate sports fans an uncompromised matchday experience.
Concurrent upgrades are progressing smoothly on the stadium’s electronic turnstiles, automated ticketing systems, and water reticulation infrastructure. With the major components of the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) now successfully delivered, stakeholders are highly optimistic that the legendary venue will secure full CAF certification before the end of the month, restoring national pride and bringing international football back home.
