Work has commenced at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals under the Presidential Hospital Rehabilitation Programme, with beneficiaries expressing profound gratitude to President Dr Emmerson Mnangagwa for what they describe as a life-changing initiative for the country’s flagship referral hospital.
The rehabilitation project, part of a broader government push to overhaul public health infrastructure, is being carried out without disrupting ongoing hospital operations, allowing patients to continue receiving care even as construction teams work through the facility. Officials say this careful sequencing reflects a deliberate approach to upgrading critical infrastructure while safeguarding service delivery at one of Zimbabwe’s busiest hospitals.
Beyond the physical upgrades, the programme has taken on a second, equally significant role: providing employment opportunities for Zimbabweans, including returning residents who have come back from the diaspora to take part in the rebuilding effort. Speaking on the progress of the works, beneficiaries also commended First Lady Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa, whose advocacy for improved maternal and child healthcare is credited with paving the way for the programme’s establishment. Among the most closely watched components of the broader rehabilitation effort is the Ambuya Nehanda Maternity Wing, now reported to be 85 percent complete and awaiting the installation of modern medical gas systems, a critical step before the facility can be brought fully into service. Once complete, the wing is expected to significantly enhance maternal healthcare capacity at Parirenyatwa, offering mothers and newborns access to modern, dignified facilities.
Officials say the programme’s impact extends beyond bricks and mortar. By creating meaningful employment within the health infrastructure sector, the initiative is helping to retain critical skills within the country and, notably, attracting skilled Zimbabweans working in South Africa back home to contribute to national development projects.
