Nesbitt Castle, one of Bulawayo’s most distinctive landmarks, is entering a new chapter. Craftsmen have been adding Gothic archways to its chapel, and the castle is now promoting itself as a venue for corporate gatherings, conferences and celebrations.
The castle’s own message is that it is “still standing, still growing.”
A Chapel Takes Shape
Photographs of the restoration show the work from rough stone to finished entrance. In the early frames, a worker in blue overalls lays brick and mortar beneath a pointed arch, with scaffolding and a wheelbarrow of cement nearby. Later images show the finished result: pale, moulded stone surrounds framing tall pointed arches, with arched timber doors fitted with black iron strap hinges.
The chapel’s walls are built of irregular, honey-coloured stone laid in the traditional manner. Along the side of the building, narrow lancet windows glaze the interior in deep blue. A steep tiled roof, a dark timber cross on the gable and a wrought-iron lamp post complete the picture. A short flight of stone steps leads up to a paved porch, surrounded by lawns and mature trees.
Nesbitt Castle describes the archways as having “a distinctly Gothic elegance, where craftsmanship meets the timeless language of stone,” adding that every curve “honours its heritage” while shaping what comes next.
The Castle’s Character
The main entrance shows the architecture at its most dramatic. Battlemented parapets, a chequerboard frieze, and chunky, hand-carved stone columns frame a dark timber door beneath a gothic-lettered “Main Entrance” sign. Leaded diamond-pane windows and slit openings recall a medieval fortress, while a red post box, ivy-clad walls, and glazed green planters bursting with flowering plants soften the stonework. Stone creatures perch on the walls, watching over the courtyard.
An Invitation to Do Business Differently
Alongside the restoration, management is positioning the castle as an alternative to the conventional boardroom. “Imagine taking your next corporate gathering somewhere with a little more character,” the venue says, promising a place where “meetings can become conversations, conversations can become connections,” and formal occasions can still have fun.
The castle says it can host corporate functions and conferences, team celebrations, product launches and other special events, offering a setting that turns an occasion into an experience. Its pitch is that the best ideas often come when people step outside the usual.
Looking Ahead
Weekly messages from the castle liken life to its own layout: levels to climb, corridors to travel and doors yet to be opened. “There is always another chapter waiting beyond the door,” the venue notes.
For organisations seeking something different, and for visitors drawn to the story of a castle that keeps growing, Nesbitt Castle is open to booking enquiries.
