MINISTER MHONA UNVEILS VISION FOR MAJOR AIRPORT ROAD INTERCHANGE

In a significant stride toward modernizing the nation’s urban landscape, the Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Honourable Advocate Felix Mhona, today conducted a high-level technical tour of the construction site for the new Cloverleaf Interchange. Situated at the strategic intersection of Harare Drive and Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Road—popularly known as Airport Road—this project stands as a flagship initiative under the Second Republic’s infrastructure development agenda. The tour, which took place on May 11, 2026, allowed the Minister and his delegation to assess the initial site clearing and land preparation phases currently being executed by contractors.

This transformative project is meticulously designed to address the persistent congestion that has historically plagued one of the capital’s most vital transport corridors. By creating a seamless, multi-level traffic flow, the interchange aims to drastically reduce travel times for commuters heading to the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport, while simultaneously enhancing road safety for thousands of daily motorists. Minister Mhona highlighted that the project is not merely an isolated engineering feat but a critical component of a broader national strategy to elevate Zimbabwe’s transport infrastructure to world-class standards.

Addressing members of the press during the hard-hat tour, Advocate Mhona characterized the interchange as a long-awaited development milestone. He took the opportunity to applaud His Excellency, President Comrade Dr. Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, for his visionary leadership in prioritizing the modernization of national infrastructure. The Minister underscored that these projects are tangible evidence of the government’s commitment to national development, ensuring that domestic expertise and resources are leveraged to build a more resilient economy.

Furthermore, the Minister reaffirmed his Ministry’s dedication to transparency, accountability, and the delivery of high-quality infrastructure that offers direct benefits to the citizenry. He revealed that the completion of this cloverleaf structure would serve as a catalyst for a massive expansion of the city’s road network. Specifically, this project paves the way for the development of ten additional interchanges across key nodes, including Glenara and other high-traffic routes.

This comprehensive “Greater Harare Interchanges Project” is set to revolutionize traffic management within the capital. Accompanied by Permanent Secretary Engineer Joy Makumbe, heads of various parastatals, and senior government officials, Minister Mhona’s visit reinforces the momentum behind Zimbabwe’s journey toward attaining an Upper Middle-Income Society by 2030.
