The rehabilitation and widening of Chitungwiza Road linking the dormitory town to Trabablas Interchange is progressing well.
This is expected to ease traffic congestion along the busy route.
Currently, work is being carried out near the Irvine area.
In a statement this Wednesday, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development confirmed the development.
“Work is in progress on the Chitungwiza Road Construction Project. Progress continues on one of the Ministry’s key infrastructure projects, as construction advances on this vital road artery in the Irvines area of Chitungwiza.
“Once complete, this road will significantly ease congestion for thousands of daily commuters, improve connectivity, and provide a much-needed boost to local economic activity. Together, we are building a Zimbabwe that moves forward,” said the ministry.
Government started rehabilitating part of the Chitungwiza Road under the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme (ERRP2) in 2023.
Initially launched in 2021 as a short-term response to extensive road damage caused by years of neglect and extreme weather, ERRP2 has since evolved into a long-term national infrastructure revival initiative aligned with Vision 2030.
This reaffirms the Government’s commitment to building a modern, interconnected transport network capable of positioning Zimbabwe as a regional logistics hub.Citu
More than 50 000 km have been rehabilitated under the programme so far, while 2 000 structures have been attended to since the launch of ERRP2. Zimbabwe has an estimated road network of 90 000 km.
