Construction has officially commenced on a state-of-the-art five-level parking structure within the rapidly expanding Highland Park Precinct in Highlands, Harare. The multi-storey parkade, located strategically behind the new Design Quarter, represents a significant investment by developer Terrace Africa aimed at solving the increasing demand for secure, convenient parking at the multi-faceted urban hub.
The Highland Park Precinct, situated seven kilometres northeast of the CBD along ED Mnangagwa Road, is Terrace Africa’s ambitious project designed to transform a 200,000 square-meter stretch into a mixed-use commercial and residential centre. Inspired by international models like South Africa’s Melrose Arch, the master plan includes additional retail space, multi-storey offices, a hotel with conferencing facilities, medical suites, and over 350 residential apartments, all interconnected by pedestrian walkways. The new five-storey parkade is a critical enabling component of this grand vision.
The initial phase of the development, the Highland Park Shopping Centre, which opened in June 2022, proved immensely popular, quickly reaching 100% occupancy. This success, coupled with the rapid progression of Phase 2 (which includes the specialized Design Quarter), has necessitated a massive increase in parking capacity beyond the existing 300+ surface bays. The new structure will facilitate high-density parking, ensuring that the precinct can handle the traffic generated by the upcoming office towers, the international hotel, and the residential complexes.
A source close to the project indicated that the parkade will serve as a central parking hub, designed with green building standards and smart technology to enhance security and sustainability—key pillars of the overall precinct design. This focus on premium, integrated amenities is part of the developer’s strategy to attract “aspirational future-thinking professionals,” blending the balance between work, play, and modern urban living.
The development is a testament to the positive impact of Zimbabwe’s renewed focus on attracting investment into its property sector, supported by initiatives like the Local Development Plan no. 60. By constructing modern, large-scale infrastructure like the five-level parkade, Terrace Africa is laying the foundation for an integrated community that is expected to significantly boost commercial activity and raise real estate values in the affluent Highlands area. The completion of this vital infrastructure will be closely monitored as the precinct races towards its goal of becoming one of Harare’s foremost modern lifestyle and business destinations.
