WOOD IS STILL KING IN ZIMBABWE’S CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY!

By Martin Chemhere

While modern materials like concrete and steel dominate much of the global construction industry, wood continues to play a significant role in Zimbabwe’s building sector. This enduring presence is rooted in the country’s rich forestry resources and the versatility of timber as a building material.

Zimbabwe boasts a variety of indigenous hardwoods, such as teak and mukwa, known for their strength and durability. These woods are particularly valued for high-end finishes, flooring, and joinery, adding a touch of natural elegance to buildings.

Beyond hardwoods, commercially grown softwood species like pine and eucalyptus are also widely utilized. These provide more affordable options for structural elements like roof trusses, framework, and scaffolding. Wood’s availability and relative affordability compared to imported materials make it a practical choice, especially in more rural areas.

The construction industry also supports a network of timber suppliers, sawmills, and carpenters with specialized skills in working with wood. This local expertise ensures that timber remains a viable and accessible material for a range of construction projects, from housing to commercial buildings.

Furthermore, there’s a growing interest in sustainable building practices in Zimbabwe. Wood, as a renewable resource, aligns well with this trend. Efforts to promote responsible forestry management and the use of certified timber further enhance wood’s appeal as an environmentally friendly building material.

In both traditional and contemporary construction, wood maintains its place in the Zimbabwean building landscape, blending heritage with modern needs.
