A Vision for the Future
As Arundel School celebrates its Platinum Jubilee, a remarkable new landmark has joined its grounds. The Solar Walkway, a project that perfectly blends sustainability, design excellence, and community spirit.
Powered by the Sun
Roofed with high-efficiency solar panels, the walkway captures the power of the sun to generate clean, renewable energy to power:
• The Charging ports on the walkway benches and waiting shelters benches
• The Walkway and Waiting shelter lighting
• The Light Box advertising screens (an ideal platform for corporate sponsorship and brand visibility)
• Surplus energy fed directly into the school’s main grid.
“Designed not just as a passage, but as a place to pause, connect, and recharge.”
A Haven for Students
Surrounded by lush gardens, the walkway and its waiting shelters are designed to be more than just functional spaces. They are comfortable, shaded areas where students can relax, chat, and recharge their devices while waiting for their parents and guardians. This thoughtful integration of technology and comfort makes the Solar Walkway a social and an environmental hub, fostering both community and consciousness.
Design for a Sustainable Era
In today’s world, architectural excellence is measured not only by form and function, but also by its contribution to the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The Solar Walkway exemplifies this principle by merging innovation with responsibility. An elegant extension of the school’s existing walkway, the structure terminates in a series of waiting shelters that overlook the car park and sports fields. Its steel portal frame supports a solar-panelled roof, while precast concrete benches, painted in Arundel pink and mounted on black masonry bases, offer functional charm with built-in charging ports.
The walkway branches into three distinct arms, forming four triangular courtyards that preserve the school’s iconic views while creating pockets of serenity and shade.
Honouring the Past, Embracing the Future
Though strikingly modern, the Solar Walkway complements Arundel School’s timeless architecture, standing confidently within the school’s 70-year-old landscape. It is a tribute to Arundel School’s heritage and a promise for the future. It is a bold statement of what education, innovation, and community can achieve together. “The Solar Walkway truly lights the way to a brighter,
greener, and more sustainable tomorrow.”
