NUST UNVEILS $17 MILLION ACCOMMODATION AND TECHNOVATION CENTRE IN MAJOR UPGRADE PUSH

The National University of Science and Technology (NUST) is undergoing a significant transformation, marked by ambitious infrastructural projects and a concerted drive toward high-impact research aimed at bolstering the national economy. The upgrades, particularly the opening of a state-of-the-art student residence and a new Technovation Centre, underscore NUST’s commitment to providing a world-class environment for learning, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

The most notable development is the completion of a $17 million student accommodation complex. This modern facility is designed to house over 1,000 students, directly addressing the critical shortage of on-campus housing. More than just beds, the complex features a range of amenities intended to improve the quality of student life, including fast-food outlets, shops, salons, and sports facilities, transforming it into a self-contained hub of convenience and community.

Further solidifying its mandate to foster innovation, NUST has officially opened the Professor Phineas Mogorosi Makhurane Technovation Centre. Named in honour of the university’s founding Vice-Chancellor, the centre is set to become the institutional engine for cutting-edge research, technology transfer, and business incubation. It will provide essential support and resources to students and staff looking to commercialise their inventions, creating a tangible link between academic research and market realities.

The university’s leadership sees these developments not just as institutional enhancements, but as direct contributions to Zimbabwe’s economic diversification and job creation strategy. NUST is already deeply engaged in high-value research projects with significant commercial potential. These include specialised projects like cannabis cultivation and oil extraction, exploring the export market for blueberry farming, and pioneering tomato powder production. These initiatives are not merely academic exercises; they are expected to generate substantial revenue streams for the university while simultaneously creating much-needed jobs in the local community.

To ensure these projects move successfully from the lab to the market, NUST is actively forging powerful alliances. The university has entered into a key partnership with the National Venture Capital Company of Zimbabwe. This collaboration will provide the necessary financial and business support to scale up research outputs, helping the university transition successfully into a key driver of economic growth in the region.

These initiatives demonstrate NUST’s proactive commitment to providing quality education that is relevant to national needs. By focusing on practical, income-generating research and investing heavily in student welfare and innovation infrastructure, NUST is positioning itself as a modern, forward-thinking institution ready to face the challenges of the 21st century and contribute robustly to Zimbabwe’s future prosperity.
