NRZ RELAUNCHES AFFORDABLE PASSENGER TRAIN SERVICES ON KEY ROUTES

The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) is set to roll back into service on two major domestic routes, reintroducing passenger trains linking Bulawayo to Victoria Falls and Harare to Mutare starting Friday, October 17, 2025. This crucial development signals a renewed commitment by the national carrier to provide safe, reliable, and affordable transport options for the travelling public.

The resumption of the inter-city service comes after a period of limited operations, and it has been strategically timed to cater to both ordinary travellers and the domestic tourism market. The two popular routes—one connecting the commercial hub of Bulawayo with the country’s tourism capital, and the other traversing the scenic Eastern Highlands—are anticipated to inject much-needed relief into the transportation sector.

NRZ confirmed that the trains will feature Economy and Standard coaches. The inclusion of these classes is a direct response to the public’s demand for accessible travel, ensuring that the service remains affordable for everyday commuters. This move is particularly significant for the Harare-Mutare route, which recently saw a brief but popular “Rail Leisure” service launch with premium offerings. The new, regular service will focus on high-volume, cost-effective travel, with the NRZ previously indicating plans to offer highly affordable fares on the Mutare route to meet public needs.

The Bulawayo-Victoria Falls line, famed for its overnight travel and the chance to view wildlife through Hwange National Park, is especially welcomed by tourism operators as it provides an alternative, iconic means of reaching the majestic Victoria Falls.

This relaunch marks a key phase in NRZ’s strategy to revitalise its passenger division. While schedules and exact fares for the two services will be available at major stations, the return of the inter-city trains is a welcome boost to connectivity and mobility across Zimbabwe. The NRZ encourages commuters and travel enthusiasts alike to support this revitalised service, promising comfort and safety as the network once again brings the country’s major cities closer by rail. The public can make enquiries and secure tickets at major stations like Bulawayo, Victoria Falls, Harare, and Mutare.
