NEW MALL AND URBAN RENEWAL PROJECT FOR KWEKWE

By Martin Chemhere

Kwekwe, a prominent mining town in Zimbabwe’s Midlands province, is on the cusp of a significant transformation with the commencement of the ambitious Kwekwe-Amaveni Urban Renewal Project. This multi-faceted development, one of the largest undertaken in the town’s recent history, promises to inject fresh vitality into the local economy and improve the quality of life for residents.

The project, already underway, encompasses a comprehensive overhaul of the Amaveni area, featuring the construction of a modern office park, a state-of-the-art bus terminus, a bustling shopping center, and high-rise residential flats. Local construction giant Nenyasha Projects has actively publicized its involvement in the project via social media, showcasing the tangible progress being made.

A key component of the renewal initiative is the replacement of the aging DA compound in Amaveni with contemporary high-rise residential units, addressing the growing need for modern housing. The retail centerpiece of the development will be an Ok Bon Marche supermarket, serving as the anchor tenant and attracting other commercial enterprises. This aligns with Kwekwe’s vision of becoming a “smart city,” integrating technology and efficient infrastructure.

The ambitious project is part of a broader infrastructure development plan for Kwekwe, with an estimated total cost exceeding US$50 million. This investment reflects the town’s commitment to delivering inclusive service delivery and achieving value for money for its residents.

Furthermore, the Kwekwe master plan envisions the development of additional commercial malls in key areas, including Mbizo 21, 17, Extension, and the Southwood Shopping Centre. These projects are designed to decentralize commercial activity and bring essential services closer to the people, fostering economic growth and convenience. The Amaveni project is a strong first step in a long-term plan.

The anticipated economic impact of these developments is substantial, with the creation of new jobs, increased local spending, and the attraction of further investment. The Kwekwe-Amaveni Urban Renewal Project and its associated initiatives are poised to usher in a new era of prosperity for the town, solidifying its position as a vibrant and thriving hub in the Midlands region.
