The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development has issued a formal public notice regarding the temporary and partial road closure of Josiah Chinamano Street in Bulawayo. This significant infrastructure project, which commenced on April 8, 2026, is scheduled to continue through November 7, 2026.
The closure affects the stretch from 14th Avenue towards Birkenhead Road and is a critical component of the government’s ongoing national road rehabilitation works, currently being promoted under the social media hashtag #KILOMETERBYKILOMETER.
As this specific corridor serves a heavily built-up industrial area, the Ministry has developed a comprehensive traffic management plan to minimize disruption to the flow of commerce and daily commuting. Motorists who typically utilize this route are being redirected to alternative paths, specifically via Plumtree Road and Manchester Road. While the primary stretch is closed to through traffic, the Ministry has confirmed that temporary access will still be granted to those needing to reach specific services along Chinamano Avenue or those traveling toward the Railton area and its immediate surroundings.
The rehabilitation works are part of a broader commitment to improving the national road network, ensuring that industrial logistics and public transport can move safely and efficiently. By addressing the wear and tear on this vital industrial artery, the Ministry aims to bolster the longevity of the infrastructure and reduce long-term vehicle maintenance costs for the motoring public. The seven-month window for the project reflects the substantial nature of the engineering and resurfacing tasks required to bring the road up to modern standards.
Safety remains the paramount priority for the duration of the construction period. The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development strongly advises all drivers to strictly obey posted traffic signs and follow the instructions provided by on-site officials. Motoring residents and transport operators are encouraged to drive with heightened caution, reduce their speed when approaching the affected industrial zones, and factor extra travel time into their daily schedules to account for the rerouting.
The Ministry has expressed its regret for any inconvenience caused by these essential works and thanked the public for their continued cooperation and patience. This project represents a vital investment in the city’s industrial backbone, ensuring that the infrastructure supporting Bulawayo’s economic sectors remains robust and reliable for years to come. Updates regarding the progress of the rehabilitation are expected to be shared through the Ministry’s official communication channels.
