Meet Your Architects: Shaping Zimbabwe’s Architectural Landscape

Irene Masiyanise: Pioneering Leadership and Diverse Design Explorations

Irene Masiyanise is the Principal Architect of Masiyanise TI Architect (MTI Architect).
She studied for the Architectural Degree Program BA Hon Arch and PgD at the University of Portsmouth UK. As well as a registered member of the Architects Council of Zimbabwe, Irene is a member of the Architects Registration Board, UK.
After graduating she advanced professionally by working for numerous architectural firms in the United Kingdom, Japan, Taiwan, and the United States. She has designed and managed a range of projects. Whilst working in Japan for Atelier Zo, she designed a sculptural exhibition entrance for the large magazine company “Jump”, and Hot Spring spas in Southern Japan. She was part of a Team that designed a nine-story office building in London’s Soho Square. In 2000 she returned to Zimbabwe and founded Masiyanise TI Architect in 2004. Over her career, she has done diverse designs that include master plans, private residential, housing developments, commercial, industrial, healthcare, educational, and recreational facilities as well as holiday resorts and sculptural motifs including the Harare Airport Road name plaque.
Appointed Professional Positions
> Chairperson of Architects Council of Zimbabwe – 2018 to 2019 (First Female since enactment in 1975)
> President of the Institute of Architects of Zimbabwe – 2012 to 2014 (First Black Female since IAZ was established in 1929)
> Vice President of the Institute of Architects of Zimbabwe – 2008 to 2011
> Board Member of the ACZ and the IAZ from 2004 to 2014 & 2018 to 2019
> Member of the Professional Practice Examination Committee 2004 to date.
Interests
Irene Masiyanise is interested in exploring different building styles and cultures from around the world. She is an Honorary Rotarian for the Rotary Club of Highlands where she has been passionately involved in developing a disadvantaged school for the school to be registered as an examination center.
