Meet Your Architects: Shaping Zimbabwe’s Architectural Landscape

Bruce Rowlands graduated with a B. Arch and M. Arch from the University of Cape Town.
During university vacations and after completion of his studies Bruce worked at Architects Design Group (ADG), mentored under architect Ken Lever. In 2001 he registered with the Architects Council of Zimbabwe, while working on the River of Life Church in Eastlea, and went on to found his own practice Architexture Spatial Design.
River of Life together with a concept for a school in Mozambique was featured in “Young Architects in Africa”, selected as one of the top ten entrants from throughout Africa to be exhibited at the 2014 Venice Biennale.
Bruce is largely known for high-end residential projects and townhouse developments, the largest of which is Arlington Estate. The Gota Dam residence has won multiple international awards including House of the Year at the 2013 RIBA International Awards and his more recent work, Lakehouse, took first prize in the Residential category at the IAZ Awards held in 2022.
Other large projects completed include Mbano Manor Hotel and Palm River Hotel in Vic Falls; the firm’s largest project to date. Bruce has work experience in Zimbabwe, Malawi, England, South Africa and Mozambique.
