HARARE’S LORRAINE DRIVE REOPENING SET TO TRANSFORM WESTGATE CONNECTIVITY

The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development has officially announced the reopening of the rehabilitated Lorraine Drive. The high-traffic artery is scheduled to be commissioned for public use on March 9, 2026, during a formal ceremony at the Westgate Traffic Circle beginning at 10:00 Hours.

The project represents a critical piece of the government’s broader strategy to overhaul urban road networks and modernize the nation’s transit hubs. The Ministry’s announcement serves as a celebratory “Save the Date” for motorists, local business owners, and residents who have navigated detours and construction delays while awaiting the completion of this vital link.

The rehabilitation of Lorraine Drive is far more than a simple resurfacing project. It involved comprehensive structural reinforcements designed to handle the increased load of heavy vehicles and the high volume of daily commuter traffic that defines the Westgate area. By prioritizing this corridor, the Ministry is addressing long-standing issues of congestion and road degradation. The primary goals of the project are to ensure improved mobility for all citizens, enhanced safety through modern engineering, and the stimulation of economic growth by facilitating the smoother movement of goods and services.

This initiative is a testament to the government’s commitment to delivering quality roads that meet international standards. Ministry officials emphasized that every kilometre of progress is a step toward a more integrated and prosperous nation. The official mantra of the project, “Together, we build. Together, we connect,” reflects a collaborative approach to national development and a focus on long-term durability over quick fixes.

The Westgate Traffic Circle, which has historically been a notorious bottleneck for travellers entering the city from the northwest, is expected to see immediate relief following the commissioning. This project aligns directly with the National Development Strategy, which identifies world-class infrastructure as a fundamental enabler for achieving an upper-middle-income economy.

Members of the public, transport stakeholders, and the media are invited to witness the ribbon-cutting ceremony. As the Ministry moves forward with its infrastructure agenda, the successful completion of Lorraine Drive stands as a symbol of the progress currently transforming the Zimbabwean landscape.
