The ambitious Harare-Beitbridge Road Rehabilitation and Upgrading Project is racing toward its completion, signifying a major triumph in Zimbabwe’s national infrastructure drive. As of the latest update on November 12, 2025, the project has surpassed the 90% completion mark, with a total of 525.5 kilometres of the critical trade and tourism route having been successfully rehabilitated and opened to traffic. Only 56.5 kilometres remain to be completed on the entire stretch.
This vital infrastructure project recently celebrated a significant milestone with the opening of a new 3-kilometer section at Rutenga to motorists. This addition further enhances connectivity and improves travel efficiency along the corridor, which is essential for regional trade linking South Africa with Zimbabwe and the wider SADC region.
The rapid and sustained progress of the project is a testament to the efficient collaboration and commitment demonstrated by the local contractors involved. The workload is distributed among several Zimbabwean firms, ensuring that the substantial investment remains within the local economy and contributes to capacity building within the construction industry.
According to the latest progress breakdown, the major contractors have completed the following lengths: Bitumen World leads with 122km completed, followed closely by Fossil Contracting with 118km. Masimba Holdings has successfully finished 98km, while Exodus and Co. has completed 90.3km. Tensor Systems is also a major contributor with 90km completed, and a shorter section of 7.2km was completed under a Trial arrangement.
The rehabilitation and upgrading of this key highway is viewed as a cornerstone for national development. Once fully operational, the modernized road will dramatically improve the efficiency of trade and commerce by reducing transit times and lowering logistical costs for businesses. Furthermore, the enhanced road quality is expected to provide a significant boost to tourism and, critically, improve road safety for all travellers along one of the country’s busiest thoroughfares. The project is firmly in its final stages, with all teams focused on driving to the finish line to deliver a fully modernized corridor that paves the way for a better-connected Zimbabwe.
