The current phase of work involves the resealing of a 5-kilometre section and the intensive construction of a new 10-kilometre stretch. This work is critical to reversing years of dilapidation that made travel between the two towns arduous, forcing many motorists to take a much longer detour via Bulawayo. The investment reflects the government’s commitment to rehabilitating and expanding essential infrastructure under the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1) and the overarching Vision 2030 goal of achieving an upper middle-income economy.

Officials during the tour were quick to emphasize the strategic importance of the road, particularly as Gwanda and Maphisa are at the heart of a critical mining and ranching hub.
