Eight senior students from Falcon Astra Academy have successfully completed the rigorous 12-day TLB Operators Course, marking a significant step in their journey towards practical, skills-based learning. Following four days of intensive classroom instruction, the group transitioned to the hands-on phase at an accredited Asset Management & Training Centre in Marula, demonstrating the academy’s commitment to real-world vocational training.
The course focused on the TLB (Tractor Loader Backhoe), a versatile machine essential to the construction and civil engineering sectors, combining the mobility of a tractor, the lifting power of a front loader, and the digging capability of a backhoe. Students completed seven crucial theory modules, ranging from Environmental Awareness to complex Electronic Monitoring Systems. To ensure accountability and mastery, each module concluded with a written assessment, alongside essential training in firefighting and emergency response.
Under the expert supervision of instructor Mike Makosa, supported by Philpot Ncube, the students moved confidently from theoretical concepts to practical application. They spent days operating the machinery, digging trenches, shifting materials, and mastering the intricate machine controls. This focused, hands-on approach paid off, with every student passing their practical assessment with flying colours, showcasing both competence and confidence behind the controls.
The success of the course is a credit to the energy and initiative of the Falcon Astra Programme leaders, Mr. Zietsman, Mr. M. Hendry, and Mr. McKechnie, who champion this style of practical education. The students, in turn, were acknowledged as a credit to Falcon College, reflecting the high standards of discipline and dedication fostered by the institution.
These newly acquired skills represent the first steps into the working world for the students. Equipped with a comprehensive understanding of both the mechanics and the safety protocols of heavy machinery operation, they are now ready to build, lead, and make an impact in various industries. The Falcon Astra Academy continues to bridge the gap between academic study and practical employment skills, giving its graduates a distinct advantage as they move into the future.
