The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development today issued an urgent public notice announcing the temporary closure of a significant section of Harare Drive to facilitate essential road rehabilitation works. The closure, set to commence next week, will impact a busy stretch of the capital’s road network and is expected to last nearly a month.
The affected section runs from the Houghton Park Roundabout (Chinzou) to the Gleneagles/Highfield Road junction. The temporary closure will begin on Tuesday, 14 October 2025, and is scheduled to remain in effect until Monday, 10 November 2025.
The Ministry emphasized the infrastructure upgrade is essential and expressed regret for any inconvenience, while thanking the public for their cooperation and patience.
To manage the flow of traffic and mitigate congestion, the Ministry has established detailed alternative routes for motorists.
For long-distance traffic originating from Waterfalls, Chitungwiza, and Masvingo, a key diversion is in place: drivers should utilize the Glen Norah (High Glen) route via the Trabablas Interchange. Alternatively, motorists can proceed North from the Houghton Park Roundabout before turning into Willowvale Road.
Special provisions have been made for vehicles heading to the Hunter/Craig Allan Industrial Area. Access to this crucial economic hub will be maintained via Orme Road (from Mangwende Drive East) or Soutter Road (from Main Street). Traffic is directed to use the side roads running parallel to Harare Drive and Willow Road.
Motorists travelling through the area should also note that a large temporary roundabout will be installed at the Harare Drive/Willowvale Intersection. Clear signage will be in place, and drivers are strongly encouraged to follow these directions and obey all traffic controllers.
Motorists must be prepared for potential delays and are urged to allow extra travel time and exercise heightened patience and caution during the upgrade period. The Ministry’s timely communication aims to prepare the motoring public and ensure the rehabilitation works are completed efficiently and safely.
