After graduating from the Mackintosh School of Architecture, Glasgow Art School, Richard Beattie worked in UK, Malawi and Zimbabwe before establishing The Stone/Beattie Studio . Chartered Architects with Penny Stone in 1990. The Studio has been recognised locally, regionally and internationally for its completed design projects and in 2021 received the award for the Best Luxury Architecture Design Hotel in Africa for The Royal Senchi, Akosombo, Ghana. In 2022 Bokani Munodawafa joined the partnership to form Stone/Beattie/Munodawafa . Architectural Studio.
Richard Beattie has served on the Boards of the Institute of Architects (IAZ) and the Architects Council of Zimbabwe (ACZ), has represented these institutions on the Model Building By-laws Variations Committee, (Ministry of Local Government), the National Joint Practice Committee (NJPC), Harare Inner City Partnership (HICP) and numerous Standards Association of Zimbabwe (SAZ) technical committees, many of which he has Chaired. He has acted as a visiting design tutor and external examiner for the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) and is architectural advisor to the National Gallery of Zimbabwe and the National Trust of Zimbabwe.
A practicing arbitrator for nearly 25 years and past Secretary of the Zimbabwe Arbitration Association and the Zimbabwe Chapter of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, he served as a Board Member of the Friends of the National Gallery and the NGAVAD Advisory Committee, as a Governor of St John’s Educational Trust, and is currently Deputy Chairman of the Mashonaland Turf Club Board of Stewards.
