Open House is one of the leading suppliers of hardware, building materials, and tools in and around the Harare area. They have their main store and head office at 33 Speke Avenue (opposite Joina Centre) and branches in the CBD along Robson Manyika Avenue and within the NRZ complex on Seke Road, in Southerton (near the Post Office), their Open House Express store in Avondale and an outlet in Ruwa.
They opened their first store in 1985 in Robson Manyika Avenue (at the time called Forbes Road) which has since closed, but they’ve continued to grow and expand the number of their shops since then. With over 40 years of experience in the hardware retail business, they have selected the best range of products and suppliers allowing them to sell at the most competitive prices. The newest addition to their stable is their dedicated paint store adjoining their existing, well-established hardware store at 10 Robson Manyika, near the corner with Julius Nyerere Way. The new store is designed to offer customers the extra convenience of a specialized, one-stop, paint store offering the best quality paint brands and all the necessary accessories – as well as great practical product advice.
Because it’s right next door to their Building Centre outlet it means customers can get all their construction and decorating materials under one roof. The new paint shop opened in May this year in a spacious, light-filled showroom that was probably built in the early 50s and still has some of the original features. The showroom is around 500sqm with a mezzanine level and a large basement for storing stock. The building had been used as a flea market so some extensive renovations were needed to bring it up to its current standard. The whole place was cleared out and repainted, new ceilings and floors were installed and the hoist between the floors was repaired. The result is a bright and fresh shop that’s well laid out and welcoming.
Open House has carefully selected to stock four of the leading paint brands – Dulux, Astra, and Plascon (which are well-known international names), as well as the locally manufactured Atrak range. They stock all the usual water-based PVA paints for interiors and exteriors from the economical contractors’ paint right up to the more exclusive, high-end ranges like the Dulux silk range and Plascon’s Double Velvet range. They also stock oil-based enamel paints for interior and exterior use as well as some specialised paints for roof and stoep, blackboard paint, and road liner. In addition, they stock the Flash Harry waterproofing products and a large selection of aerosol paints from metallics to appliance paint.
Open House has six sales assistants to serve customers and Plascon, Dulux and Astra have provided full-time, specially trained representatives to answer any customer queries and offer reliable advice. In addition, Plascon and Dulux offer in-house tinting systems to exactly match their colour charts and swatches so customers can purchase precisely the colour they want. And it means that if you accidentally run out you can accurately match your paint tint. As a specialised paint shop Open House stocks everything you need to prepare your surfaces for painting like crack fillers, sugar soap, sandpaper and abrasives, and masking tape.
To make the job easier they have black plastic sheeting and a range of ladders. Of course, they stock all the painting tools you need like brushes, scrapers, rollers, and trays from well-known brands like Hamilton, Forge, and Ingco. And to make cleaning up easier after the job’s finished they have all the solvents and cleaning products you need like lacquer thinners, white spirits, and turpentine.
Open House will be introducing the exclusive Woodoc range of sealers, stains, colours, oils, and waxes for interior and exterior use –perfect for doors and windows, decks, and furniture. Future plans include extending their range to include automotive and industrial paints and finishes. Open House offers customers the added convenience of online ordering and free deliveries around Harare for reasonable quantities. Open House’s customers range from DIY home enthusiasts who just need one or two litres of paint to contractors, government departments, NGOs, schools, hospitals, and the hospitality industry – so no order is too big or too small.
For the best range of paints and accessories – at the best prices – visit Open House’s new specialised paint store at 10 Robson Manyika.
